Large sculptural ceramic wall light produced by Dagnæs Keramik, Denmark, circa 1970.
Formed as a monumental circular disc, the surface is deeply worked with hundreds of radiating incised lines surrounding a series of irregular concentric rings. A rich brown glaze settles into the relief, creating variations from dark chocolate to warm amber.
The character of the piece is fully revealed when illuminated. Light concealed behind the ceramic relief travels through and around the deeply textured surface, transforming the heavy earthen form into a remarkably warm, almost solar composition. The concentric structure creates successive layers of light and shadow, making the piece as much illuminated wall sculpture as functional lighting.
