Large Norwegian hand-carved wooden trau, 18th century.
Hewn from a single substantial piece of timber, this unusually large trough has a powerful, almost boat-like profile and a deeply worked surface shaped by generations of use. The interior retains pronounced carving and tool marks, while the exterior has developed a pale, dry surface contrasting beautifully with the darker, richly patinated interior.
Cracks, wear, irregularities and old repairs remain visible throughout. Rather than detracting from the piece, these traces form an important part of its character and history, giving the object the presence of a piece of vernacular sculpture as much as a utilitarian vessel.
